Known Conflicts and Limitations

Some programs and system utilities can interfere with ActiveWords keyboard monitoring, substitution delivery, or startup behavior.

Security and Utility Conflicts

  • Webroot: Webroot security software may block ActiveWords keyboard monitoring in Internet browsers, especially if you use a Webroot browser Addin or extension. Set this file to Allow: C:\Program Files (x86)\ActiveWords 5\ActiveWords.exe.
  • Malwarebytes: Malwarebytes is known to periodically remove files from the ActiveWords program folder. We recommend whitelisting C:\Program Files (x86)\ActiveWords 5\.
  • MacroExpress: MacroExpress may interfere with ActiveWords keyboard monitoring and may cause the simulated depression of the Shift key.
  • Keyboard or mouse monitors: Programs that monitor the keyboard or mouse may interfere with ActiveWords keyboard monitoring.
  • SnagIt: A temporary delay in keyboard and mouse responsiveness may occur on ActiveWords startup if SnagIt is running. If you experience this, contact support.

Application-Specific Limitations

  • Classic Shell and Classic Start 8: These programs can conflict with ActiveWords substitutions.
  • Substitute Content images: Images inside Substitute Content Actions may not appear in the triggered result if the receiving application does not accept that image format. If your application supports formatted content but does not accept images from Substitute Content Actions, contact support.
  • Time Matters: If substitutions do not work correctly in Time Matters, try turning off its Auto Text function. If the setting has not changed, it is available at File > Setup > General > User Level > Forms > Set Options for All Forms > AutoText.
